Rediscovering Canguilhem: Philosophy, Health, Ecology
Archives de Philosophie – Volume 87, Issue 1
Volume 87, Issue 1 of the journal Archives de philosophie is devoted to a special section entitled “ Redécouvrir Canguilhem : philosophie, santé, écologie” (in English: Rediscovering Canguilhem: Philosophy, Health, Ecology). This issue forms part of a contemporary reflection on the relationships between philosophy, medicine and the environment, drawing on the work of the French philosopher and physician Georges Canguilhem, a leading figure in historical epistemology and the philosophy of life.
Abstract
This collection of essays examines the relevance of Canguilhem’s thought in a context marked by changing relationships between health, society and the environments in which we live. The contributions explore the definition of the normal and the pathological, the relationship between medical knowledge and social norms, and the place of living beings within their environment. They also place contemporary ecological issues in perspective through the lens of the philosophy of life. By revisiting Canguilhem’s work, this collection highlights the richness of his analyses in shedding light on current issues such as health and ecological crises and the politics of life.
