Biomedical Humanities

This Master’s Degree in Philosophy, Biomedical Humanities track, offers a programme combining four characteristics:

  • An approach to the philosophy of medicine and biology that combines the philosophy of science, the history of philosophy, ethics and theories of justice applied to the field of health.
  • A multidisciplinary approach to issues relating to health, disease, the body and medicine, drawing on the arts (ancient and modern) and the humanities (history, law, economics, geography, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, literature and art history, information and communication sciences).
  • Teaching in pairs, with cross-disciplinary approaches (literature and medicine, philosophy and medicine, history and medicine) offered by a professor in the humanities and a doctor or researcher in the field of medicine/biology.
  • An anchoring of the programme in the biomedical professional environment (internships in hospitals, biomedical research laboratories, and health institutes).

The programme uses various types of tools (analysis of texts, images, films or pictorial representations, oral debate) to enable students to better analyse contemporary issues in the biomedical field and identify the practical challenges of health-related issues. It aims to improve oral and written communication skills through the rigorous use of argumentation and mastery of rhetoric. It also prepares students to design and produce an original research dissertation on a topic related to the biomedical and health fields, using a multidisciplinary approach.
