Ageing and Global Health: A Joint Workshop Organised by Sorbonne University and NTU

From 26 to 28 May 2026, Sorbonne University and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) organised a Franco-Singaporean scientific seminar in Paris on the subject of “Aging Workshop,” bringing together researchers, academic staff and early-career scientists from both universities.

The event provided an opportunity to address the major challenges associated with ageing populations through several key themes: metabolic regulation and age-related diseases, the mechanisms of neurodegeneration and cognitive decline, and the broader health issues associated with healthy ageing.

The opening lecture was given by Karine Clément, a recognised expert on the links between metabolism, nutrition and chronic diseases. This was followed by two scientific sessions bringing together international experts:

Session 1, “Metabolic regulation and age-related disorders”: Yusuf Ali, Judith Favier, Lei Lu and Fanny Mochel
Session 2, “Neurodegeneration and cognitive decline” : Christian Neri, Hélène Cheval, Kah-Leong Lim and Sandrine Betuing

The ASU-GHI was represented by Professor Kiyoka Kinugawa-Bourron, a member of the Institute’s Executive Committee and head of the “Autonomy – Ageing – Vulnerabilities” research axis. Her presentation highlighted the importance of an integrated approach to ageing, combining biomedical research, prevention, autonomy and overall health.

The workshop concluded with a round-table discussion focusing on education programmes, student mobility and prospects for cooperation between the two universities, illustrating the shared commitment of Sorbonne University and NTU to strengthening their scientific and educational collaboration on “ealthy ageing.” The panellists for this round-table discussion were Emmanuèle Mouchel-Vielh, Samia Salhi and Hédi Soula.

This meeting marked a new step in the development of Sorbonne University’s international partnerships on a major global health issue: supporting demographic changes and promoting healthy ageing throughout life.

A successful Franco-Singaporean partnership

Over the past decade, NTU and Sorbonne University have developed a particularly active strategic partnership, encompassing joint scientific seminars, researcher and PhD student exchanges, joint supervision of theses, and international interdisciplinary projects. In particular, 2026 saw the organisation of a joint winter school on AI for the sciences in Singapore, illustrating the two universities’ commitment to strengthening their collaboration in emerging fields.
