A discussion on the book Sapiens and Microbes, with Renaud Piarroux
A talk with Professor Renaud Piarroux will take place on Monday 2 June 2025 at Sorbonne University, to mark the publication of his book Sapiens and Microbes – Epidemics of the Past.
This event, which is open to the public, will focus on the spread of infectious diseases and the interactions between human societies and pathogens.

A scientific look at epidemics
A renowned specialist in infectious diseases and chair of the ASU-GHI Strategic Steering Committee, Renaud Piarroux offers, in this book, an analysis of the mechanisms underlying epidemics, drawing on historical, biological and social perspectives.
The event will take the form of an interview with Camille Renard, Head of Digital Projects and responsible for podcasts at France Culture, shedding light on contemporary public health challenges in a context marked by recurring global health crises.
This event is organised with the support of the Science, Culture and Society Directorate of Sorbonne University, CNRS Éditions and the SOUND project.

About the author
Renaud Piarroux is a Professor at Sorbonne University – Pitié Salpêtrière Hospital. He is also Head of the Department of Parasitology and Mycology at Pitié Salpêtrière Hospital and the author of numerous books, including Cholera. Haiti 2010–2018: History of a Disaster (CNRS Editions, 2019) and Sapiens and Microbes (CNRS Editions, 2025).
