Symposium Sorbonne University & Japan “Global Health and Aging: toward a bio-psycho-social age, a metrics to foster Brain, Mind & Physical healthy aging”
On 8 and 9 December 2025, the Global Health Institute will co-organise, alongside the Faculty of Health Sciences at Sorbonne University, an international symposium dedicated to the challenges of ageing in global health.
Entitled “Global Health and Ageing: towards a bio-psycho-social age,” this event forms part of a programme of scientific cooperation between French and Japanese teams, focusing on contemporary changes in ageing and their implications for health research and policy.

Towards an integrated measure of healthy ageing
One of the key themes of the symposium is a reflection on the concept of “bio-psycho-social ageing,” understood as an attempt to move beyond strictly biomedical approaches to ageing.
The papers presented question current tools for measuring healthy ageing, which remain largely fragmented, and explore the possibility of developing integrated indicators that combine biological capabilities, psychosocial factors and living environments. This approach is in line with the perspectives opened up by international initiatives promoting “healthy ageing.”
Combining approaches: from the biological to the social
The symposium programme reflects a desire to foster dialogue between disciplines and areas of research, through:
- the study of the biological mechanisms of ageing (immunity, metabolism, muscle function)
- the analysis of trajectories of frailty, dependency and resilience
- nutritional and environmental determinants
- cognitive, behavioural and social dimensions
- ethical issues and end-of-life care practices
- the organisation of healthcare systems in response to an ageing population
This thematic diversity enables us to approach ageing as a multidimensional phenomenon, at the intersection of the life sciences, the humanities and social sciences, and public health.
A scientific cooperation between France and Japan
The symposium will bring together several leading Japanese medical institutions:
- National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology
- Tokyo Metropolitan Institute for Geriatrics and Gerontology
- University of Tokyo Hospital
- Japan Geriatrics Society
These institutions are collaborating with teams from Sorbonne University, the National Museum of Natural History, the University of Technology of Compiègne, Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Paris, Inserm and the CNRS.
This meeting aims to consolidate existing collaborations and open up new avenues for comparative research, particularly in a context where Japan serves as a leading case study for demographic ageing.
