Career

Irina Giurgea is a medical geneticist with expertise in clinical genetics, genomics, and molecular and cellular biology. Since 2024, she has led the research Unit UMRS 933 Inserm/Sorbonne University, dedicated to rare genetic diseases, focusing on systemic autoinflammatory diseases, rare pulmonary disorders, and some developmental diseases.

Her research aims to decipher disease mechanisms, improve diagnostic precision, and identify new therapeutic approaches. She has extensive expertise in identifying and functionally characterizing variants in immune-related pathways.

Working closely with clinicians and national rare disease networks, she is committed to developing clinically actionable biomarkers to support precision medicine and to translating scientific advances into better care for patients with rare and complex conditions. The research Unit UMRS 933 Inserm/Sorbonne University is also actively engaged in an international collaboration with Fiocruz in Brazil through the ASU-GHI initiative, strengthening global efforts in rare disease research and innovation.
